About

Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) offers education in the culinary arts that will help students build the skills necessary to pursue a career in the food industry. With the right skills, graduates of PHCC’s cooking education program can look forward to working in fine-dining restaurants, catering companies, and other establishments that serve food.

At PHCC, students can learn a variety of cooking techniques and preparation methods. They will learn how to follow recipes to create dishes that showcase their skills and creativity. In addition, they can also learn how to handle and store food safely and properly as well as how to create attractive plate presentations.

The curriculum of PHCC’s cooking education program includes classes on nutrition, basic ingredients, cooking methods, equipment and tools, and food science. With these classes, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the culinary arts. Furthermore, they can also take classes about food and beverage service, kitchen management, and food production management.

An internship at a restaurant or catering business provides valuable hands-on experience for students to apply the skills learned in the classroom. During the internship, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and hone their skills.

Upon completion of the PHCC cooking education program, successful students can expect to find excellent employment opportunities in an array of roles, such as restaurant cook, private chef, pastry chef, banquet chef, or kitchen manager. The skills students gain in the program, such as safety and sanitation, problem-solving, and customer service, can equip them with the necessary requirements to start a career in the food service industry.
