Youngstown State University offers a unique opportunity to explore the culinary arts with its Cooking Education program. Students can learn cooking techniques, nutrition and food safety through hands-on instruction in the classroom and kitchen. In addition to theory classes, students have the opportunity to gain practical experience through internships with local restaurants or catering companies.
The program offers an Associate’s Degree in Restaurant and Food Service Management, as well as a Certificate in Nutrition and Food Service. As part of their coursework, students will learn about food preparation, nutrition, management, sanitation, and customer service. They will also gain valuable hands-on experience by working in a commercial kitchen. In addition, students can take classes on food styling, baking and pastry arts, and beverage management.
In the associate’s program, students can also choose to specialize in areas such as nutrition, hospitality management, food safety or business management. Many of the courses used in the program are transferable to other majors. In addition, students can take advantage of internship opportunities offered to supplement the classroom experience.
