Miami Dade College (MDC) is home to some of the most comprehensive culinary programs in South Florida. The college offers a number of options for students to gain knowledge and skill in the cooking field. From degree programs in both culinary arts and pastry arts to shorter, more specialized certificates, MDC provides prospective students with the opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming a professional chef.
The Associate in Science Degree in Culinary Arts at MDC requires completion of 63 credits spread out over five semesters. The program aims to give students the types of skills that employers look for in the industry. These include knife skills, menu planning, wine and beverage pairing, international techniques, and even team-building techniques. The program culminates with an internship so that the student can gain real-world experience in the field.
The Associate in Science Degree with Specialization in Pastry Arts follows similar guidelines as the culinary arts program but with a much greater focus on baking and confectionary styles. Students will learn about the art and science of both basic and advanced baking as well as artistic design and sculpting for showpiece desserts.
In addition to these two full degrees, MDC also offers an array of certificates that are tailored for specific purposes. These range from Culinary Entrepreneurship which teaches concepts of menu design and food cost management, to Beverage Services which teaches service protocols, wine and beer knowledge, and bar management.
At MDC, students receive more than a quality education in their chosen field. They also learn valuable life and communication skills that can help them succeed in any industry. With courses taught by professional chefs and industry leaders, students gain the knowledge to be successful in their careers. Miami Dade College provides students with the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the culinary world.
