Plymouth State University (PSU) offers culinary education opportunities to both novice and experienced cooks wishing to hone their cooking skills. The university’s Food Service Management program provides a comprehensive background in food service management including the history, fundamentals, and safety of food handling. This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the food service industry and focuses on developing students’ culinary skills and managerial competencies.
In addition to classes in Food Service Management, PSU also offers courses in Short Order Cooking and Nutrition Education providing an in-depth look at practical restaurant cooking techniques and the nutritional components of a healthy diet. Both courses emphasize hands-on experience in food preparation and use modern and traditional techniques. Through these courses students can become certified in HACCP principles, which are necessary for food service establishments to meet government regulations.
The university also offers Certificate Programs in Baking and Pastry Arts as well as in Culinary Arts. These certificate programs provide advanced training in specific culinary arts disciplines. The Baking and Pastry Arts certificate focuses on baking, decorating, and pastry production, while the Culinary Arts certificate program covers international cuisines, Garde Manger, butchery, baking, and additional advanced culinary topics. Students enrolled in these programs are prepared for the level of culinary expertise required for successful employment in the hospitality industry.
Through its educational opportunities in culinary arts, PSU prepares students with the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in the food services industry. With this knowledge, graduates can find employment within restaurants and other food service businesses or pursue higher educational opportunities.
